Impressions
This is the most physical play I have ever done. Alice in Wonderland is a very weird story and the director is well known in San Diego County for his emphasis on physical movement. Alice in Wonderland is a play that is suited for that type of direction because it is a children’s play and because there is so many fantastical elements to it. Every rehearsal and performance was a workout. I played the Knave of Hearts which is a character that is very often either cut or reduced. Instead the director made sure that his story was just as important as the caterpillar’s or the mock turtle’s or the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. I had a lot of fun with it. One of the ways I explored the character was through his voice. I made the mistake one performance of using a different dialect without rehearsing or planning it. Had I committed to that choice it could have been very funny but I was too timid and it came across as confusing. That experience really emphasized to me the importance of performing what you rehearsed and committing to your acting choices completely.
